The finest ales Carlisle has to offer.
Proper beer for people who love rich flavours.
We like proper beer that's bursting with flavour and texture. That's what we like to drink, and that's the kind of beer we brew. Alain, has a gift for blending ingredients to make complex, yet clean flavours that have character and depth. It takes time and it takes care. We're very happy with our current range which includes light, refreshing blonde ales through to a dark oatmeal stout with a chocolate and liquorice back note.
We hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we do.
Core Beer!
A collection of flavours that will surprise and delight.
This blonde brew delivers a collection of flavours that mingle in the mouth combined with just the right amount of bitterness. We’ve deliberately used hops with a low alpha level, which means we can use a lot more of them. It’s this delicate balance that gives it such a wonderful ‘hoppy bouquet’. There are more hops in here than you’d think!
Solway CAMRA's Beer of the Year
It’s the Maris Otter base combined with crystal malt (traditionally used in dark beers) that gives this brew its distinctive red gold colour and sweet taste. The hops follow on to build on the flavour and present you with a beautiful balanced finish. Spun Gold has just been awarded Beer of the Year by our local CAMRA branch.
A premium bitter with caramel and toffee flavours.
Alain says his Magic Number is 4.5. From all the beers he has drunk and enjoyed over the years, his favourites all seem to have an ABV of 4.5%. This Magic Number is based on traditional English XBs. This is a premium bitter, soft and smooth with indulgent caramel and toffee flavours and Iightly bittered to give a refreshing malty beer.
Core Blonde!
Light, crisp and very hoppy
Citadel is a fantastic, easy drinking hoppy beer. It’s really refreshing and packed with flavour. At 3.8% it’s an ideal session ale. We’ve used Styrian hops to provide a light aromatic bitterness with spicy and earthy notes. The Citadel in Carlisle and Carlisle Citadel Railway Station are highly impressive buildings in the centre of the city – we really hope you’ll be impressed with our Citadel too!
A fantastic session ale
Our latest brew is a light gold 3.7% session ale. It's a refreshingly hoppy beer with light herbal, floral and caramel flavours and a long lasting bitter finish. It's very easy to drink as a few of the regulars at The Spinners can testify to!!
Lovely Pale Ale
Named after the famous race, which has been run in Carlisle since the 1700's, our Carlisle Bell has a light citrus and tropical fruit flavour.
It has the added advantage of being gluten free!!!.
Beers we love but only make every now and again!
Dark ruby and hoppy
A traditional style of beer named after the porters in the London markets who used to drink it on a regular basis! A porter is a beer made with brown malt and well-hopped. The brown malt gives it a lovely ruby colour and the addition of American and New Zealand hops adds a pucnhy fruit flavour
An international pale ale.
Hmmm… how to describe our Experiment; an international pale ale with American, New Zealand and British hops with a fresh, citrus taste, it certainly packs a punch in all senses of the word. Deceptively easy drinking for the ABV. Carlisle was home to the State Management Scheme, a Government social engineering project to control excessive drinking that lasted until the 1970’s – it was known as ‘The Carlisle Experiment’.
Nutty and fruity with the colour of chestnuts
If we say so ourselves, our Carlisle Nut Brown ale is quite simply awesome. We’ve combined 4 different malts to create a full-flavoured, rounded, nutty taste with the hops adding to the overall fruitiness. It’s the colour of autumn chestnuts. It builds up a warm with a sweet nutty flavour, and the hops linger in your mouth. What more could you want?
